The Lemosho route is lesser-known. It begins on the western side of Kilimanjaro. Walking through the rainforest for the first two days the vegetation changes to heath and moorland with many ferns and ericas along the way. The narrow trail sometimes has some very steep sections and is scenically diverse. On the third day, the trail joins the Machame route. Hikers overnight in tents.

Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha
You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro Airport by our driver and taken to Get way hotel in Arusha. The rest of the day will be free. Relax at the pool or explore the small town of Arusha. There will be a pre-departure briefing on what can be expected over the next few days and a gear check at the hotel before the tour start. You’ll dine at the lodge and get a necessary good night’s sleep.
Dinner and overnight.
Day 1 Arusha (1400m) – Londorossi Gate (2100m) – Mti Mkubwa camp (Big Tree Camp 2750m)
Hiking time: 3 hours
Habitat: Montane forest
After your breakfast at the hotel, you will two hours from Arusha (1400m) to Londorossi Park Gate (2100m) where you will be registered by the national park authorities. Then you drive another 15 km into the dense rainforest to where you be ready to begin your 3-hour hike into the rainforest. You will stop for an afternoon lunch break and a moderately steep path leads to the Mti Mkubwa "Big Tree Camp" Campsite (2750m) in the early evening. Look out for monkeys and interesting birds along the way. The tents will be already set up and hot tea and washing water will be waiting. The chef will prepare a snack then dinner for the clients. At nighttime, mountain temperatures may drop to freezing so be prepared!

Day 2 Mti Mkubwa "Big Tree Camp" (2750 m) – Shira Camp 2 (3900 m)
Hiking time: 6.5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today’s long trek starts after an early morning breakfast on a small trail that continues through the trees and gradually ascends to reach the Shira plateau. Enjoy the views of the mountain and plains below. The path continues to cross the Shira Ridge (ca. 3600 m) and you will stop for lunch at the Shira Camp 1 after another few hours. In the last section (approximately 3 hrs), you will climb another 250 meters in altitude and pass the surreal Senecia-plants growing to over 8m in height. Reaching the camp after the long day, you will relax with coffee and tea and be nourished with a 3-course meal tonight. As the sun sets you might see the summit glowing in the afternoon sun.

Day 3 Shira (3840m) – Lava Tower (4630m) – Barranco Camp (3950m)
Hiking time: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Semi-desert
You will gain 700m in altitude but descend to sleep at Barranco – 60 m higher than last night’s camp. This will help with acclimatization as you will go up to 4600 m before descending again. Today begins with a long uphill in the direction of the Lava Tower Hut (4640m) and you will notice how the landscape changes to a rocky alpine desert. Later, the path descends again to the Barranco Valley with its giant Senecias and Lobelias. After six to seven hours you should arrive at the most beautiful camp on the mountain – the Barranco Camp.

Day 4 Barranco Camp (3950m) – Karanga Camp (3950m)
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine desert
This is a short hiking day meant for acclimatization. After early morning breakfast, it is now time to conquer the Great Barranco Wall! Although it may look intimating at first glance, hikers state that this Class 2 hike is usually much easier than they anticipated. You will have fantastic views of the southern glacier of Kibo as well as of the Kibo summit and will be above the clouds. The trail then winds up and down in the Karanga Valley. You will spend the night at Karanga Camp (3950m) and enjoy dinner and washing at the site.

Day 5 Karanga Camp (3959m) – Barafu Hut (4600)
Hiking time: 2-3 hours
Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine desert
After breakfast, you will begin your ascent. The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the trail used to descend on the final two days. As you continue hiking for an hour, you will reach Barafu Hut. This is the last water stop for the porters because there is no accessible water at Barafu Camp (4550m). The word “Barafu” in Swahili means “ice” and this camp is located on the rocky, exposed ridge. Tents will be exposed to wind and rocks so it is important for hikers to familiarize themselves with the campsite before dark. An early dinner will be served so hikers can rest before attempting the summit the same night. Your guide will brief you in detail on how to prepare for summit night. Get to sleep by 19:00!

Day 6 summit attempt Barafu Camp (4600m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)
Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
It is dark and cold as you set off just after midnight. You will climb the frozen volcanic dust by headlamp going towards Stella Point on the crater rim – about six hours. The sun should be rising when you arrive here. Just an hour or two more and you will be standing on the highest point of the crater: Uhuru peak. On top of the world! Take a short break for pictures and celebratory hugs before you tackle the steep and dusty descent. By now the volcanic ash will have thawed… You will stop for a short tea break at Barafu and then continue downhill for about three hours to Mweka hut(3100m), this is your overnight stop. Refuel by drinking lots of fluids and have a good helping at supper time. The Mweka Trail will lead you through the scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rain forest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rain forest, so fog and rain should be expected. You will have dinner, wash, and rest soundly at the camp.

Day 7 Mweka Camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m) - Arusha
Hiking time: 3 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Forest
Following a well-deserved breakfast, a traditional farewell ceremony from the porters begins the day. a celebration full of dancing and singing. After about three hours of comfortably descending through the greenness of the forest, you should reach the Mweka Gate where the driver will be waiting. Back at the lodge, a hot shower, cold drinks, a debrief and your certificate of achievement are waiting. Well done! The National Park will require all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point (5685m) receive green certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. After receiving certificates, hikers will descend into the Mweka village for 1 hour (3 kilometers). You will be served a hot lunch then you will drive back to Arusha for long overdue showers and more celebrations.

After breakfast, you will be taken to the Kilimanjaro Airport or continue your safari in Africa, however, this package can be combined with the Zanzibar beach holiday.
